With
active players conservatively estimated at
50 milllion, the
guitar is
without doubt the world’s most popular musical instrument. The
guitar’s extraordinary success is in no small part a result of its
unique ability to cross the boundaries of culture, class and musical
genre.
From the sophistication and
elegance of Andres Segovia to the primal racket of
Seasick Steve,
from the downhome simplicity of
Maybelle Carter to the stunning
virtuosity of
Tommy Emmanuel or
Steve Vai, the common threads are
simply wood and wire, fingers and frets.
The electrification of the
instrument in the early 1930s enabled the guitar to establish itself
as a cultural icon, creating sounds that came to define the popular
music of the last 60-plus years. Musical trends may come and go, but
the guitar has been the driving force of almost all of them
This September Transclyde Music and “The Big F”
